RAILWAYS ENGINEERING LAB GIST
ETS DE INGENIEROS DE CAMINOS, CANALES Y PUERTOS
UNIVERSITY OF CANTABRIA
DESCRIPTION AND GOALS OF THE ORGANISATION
The Railways Laboratory is specialized in structural design of rail track
components, track stability design and solutions in order to achieve track
maintenance.
The most important activities developed: (1) Vertical stresses and vertical
displacements (track layers) (2) Modeling and computational design of track
structure (3) Simulation of track transitions (4) Slab track systems
simulation and design (5) Vehicle modeling and simulation.
AREAS OF ACTIVITY
t Dynamic Simulation t Track subgrade
t Track Mechanics t Superstructure
t Track Transitions t Track alignment design
t Slab track systems t Railway Maintenance

Programs:
* DARTS (Dynamic Analysis of Rail Track Systems)- Finite Element Software static and dynamic anlysis and simulation
of vehicle and track.
* AUTOCAD CIVIL 3-D- Software to design track alignments (Computer aided track design). Horizontal, vertical and
lateral geometry track design.
* VAMPIRE- Track vehicle interaction analysis and simulation.
* GEOSTUDIO- Track terrain interaction analysis and simulation. Geotechnics.
* MATLAB- Programing language and numerical calculation software which uses its own language. Useful in control
engineering, image processing and digital signal processing.
* ARCGIS- Geographic Information system software which allows to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and
present all types of spatial or geographical data. Useful in railways maintenance and management.
* SPSS- Software package used for statistical analysis in research. Statistic analysis, regression models, data
management, etc.
