DESCRIPTION AND GOALS OF THE ORGANISATION
The Light Alloys and Surface Treatments Design Centre (CDAL) is a group
of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya dedicated to applied research
and technological innovation. CDAL has two lines of research, one on Light
Alloys and the other on Surface Treatments and Coatings. Within the first
line, one of the most important area is the development and optimization of
forming processes in semi-solid state (SMM). The second line develops
wear and/or corrosion resistant coatings, specifically by high-velocity
thermal spray (HVOF).

TEST FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT, TYPES OF TESTING AND/OR TRI"LS
* High Velocity Oxy-Fuel Thermal spray equipment (HVOF), Sulzer Metco. WokaJet-400 spray gun with liquid fuel
(kerosene); 2600DJM spray gun with gas fuel (hydrogen).
* Scanning electron microscope, SEM (JEOL JSM-5600) with Oxford EDS microanalysis system (software: INCA).
* ZWICK Z100 tensile test equipment. Test temperatures: from -75ºC to 250ºC, with strain gauge in all temperature
ranges.
* INSTRON 5584 tensile test equipment. Test temperatures: from room temperature up to 1200ºC with strain gauge in
all of the temperature ranges.
* Induction furnace equipment (AMBRELL EKOHEAT), equipped with coils of different diameters.
* Heat treatment furnace equipment (HOBERSAL). Temperature up to 1500 ± 1ºC.
* Metal Analyser spectrometer SPECTROMAXX for composition analysis of metal alloys.
* Metallographic preparation equipments (STRUERS): manual cut-off and automatic precision cut-off machines,
automatic polishing machines.
* Optical microscopes (LEICA and NIKON) with image analysis systems.
* Tribometer PIN ON DISC to determine the friction coefficients and wear resistance.
* Surface rugosimeter equipment (TAYLOR-HOBSON FORM TALYSURF PLUS).
* Micro Hardness Test equipment (STRUERS DURAMIN).
* Ultra Micro Hardness Test equipment (FISHERSCOPE H100).
* Universal Macro Hardness Test equipment (EMCO OSTERER).
* Potentiostat-galvanostat for corrosion analysis (PRINCETON APPLIED RESEARCH VMP3).
* Salt and acetic-salt spray testing equipment.
* Ball milling attritor to grind metal and ceramic powders.
* Ultrasound equipment for defect detection in metallic components.
* RX fluoroscope to measure the thickness of multilayer coatings.
